Pretty things

I bought a mug the other day and I have become fascinated by the designs. It used fabric textures within the  images so I thought I would experiment with it! Seemed like a nice idea for a birthday card. Here are some duckies....

Other things of late

Continuing with my illustrator work, I have been experimenting with different ideas and concepts. I have also tried some more illustration techniques with bunny and tree. Here are some of my latest bits and bobs.

James Alternative sketches

This was another design I had for James that I have just manipulated in illustrator and photoshop.

Nigel and James in Illustrator

I have just worked up the Nigel and James drawings in illustrator then coloured them in photoshop. I was experimenting with shading, I didn't want too much as I intended the drawings to be quite simple and naive.

This is Nigel....

And this is James looking rather scared...

New ideas

I have been experimenting with illustration techniques with my new book idea. Here are some sketches that I have done.

Run Cycle

Today I worked on the run cycle for Scarlet. It is after the scene where she is angry, before she ends up scared. Its quite a leisurely run but I wanted to make it have quite a childlike quality. I wanted to make it a cycle as it is quite a long scene. I did some reference of myself running down the corridors which really helped to get the key positions. It is only a playblast so the quality is not perfect.

Initial sketches for Scarlet and Sheep

I have finally found my way to a scanner and these are all snippets from my sketch books. They show all the initial ideas I had for my final piece.

Little Inspirations

I always find inspiration in the cutest of images. One such source is the faithful Metro that I get on my way to uni in the morning. I found this image tucked away in my sketchbook and it never ceases to give me a mountain of ideas for little stories!

My Animatic - I will follow ewe...

Here is my animatic for my final piece. Currently working on the shots angles in Maya, I feel that some of them are a bit straight on. I made the animatic in Flash, drawing straight in with my Wacom. I found this process much easier that completing it by hand, as I always have too many ideas for shots, it takes a while to find which I ones fit best. This was the first bit of major work I completed with a Wacom tablet and I cannot speak highly enough of it! The most valuable investment I have made, I love it!

The narration was done by the talented Frankie Swan (a fellow animation student), who has a voice that really fits with my work (Frankie also helped me out on Sophie and the Balloon!). I've had quite positive feedback from showing people the animatic. At our crit at the National Gallery the only advice I was given was to make sure that the backgrounds in the final are rich in order to compliment the characters and to break up the narration to gain a less even paced piece.

Some Environments

Here is an image of one of the scenes from my final film. I need to scan in the sketches I did as soon as I get near a scanner! I designed everything before I made the objects in Maya. I will also scan in my character sketches soon!

Scarlet and Sheep - 3d models

Here are my characters for my final project. They are fully rigged - the sheep by me and Scarlet in Set-up Machine (SUM) due to the time limits. I find that SUM is much quicker as you do not have to do so much painting of skin weights, especially on bipeds. The sheep has a much more simplified rig and controllers which is perfect for the actions I intend for him to do.

My Characters

The final project is now getting underway. I have completed my animatics and sound recording and now I am starting to think more in depth about my characters.
I have been working on my characters for my final project in Adobe Illustrator. It is the first time I have really used it but I have fallen in love with the interface. It allows me to make the shapes I want really easily, think its because I love using Flash to draw and this is very similar. I have also invested in a Wacom Baboo Tablet, which I have to say is possibly the best purchase I have ever made!
My characters are a little girl called Scarlet and a sheep. I am in the process of modelling them in Maya as I will animate my final piece in 3D. The sheep is complete, I rigged him by hand and it works nicely, he also has blendshapes so he can chew.

Sophie and the Balloon

My end of term project. The task set was to show a character struggling with an object. Mine is about a little girl whose balloon keeps trying to fly away but she will not let it! Modelled by me and Sophie was rigged in setup machine. Very proud of how it turned out, still needs some work done on it, especially in the scene where she is struggling with the balloon. Enjoy!

Little fish

A little fish that I was very proud of at the start of this year. Modelled and rigged by myself.

Lipsync Exercises

This was a piece from my personal lipsync project. I chose to complete a piece based on a little girl having a bit of an accident as I thought the facial expressions along with the lipsync would be a really nice challenge for me. Using the morpheus rig by Josh Burton.
